i dont know what you mean by “powerful” but bearded dragons are good pets.
also
water dragon
leopard gecko
corn snake
ball python
yes iguanas are cool too
All your requiremetn is that its leagal in ohio? i think you need to do some serious researching… you should know what you are buying before you get it..
Corn snake.
They are easy to care and look after, and keep and are very tame and docile. They rarely bite and are great fun.
There is so much information i want to give you, but here is a website that sums it all up:
http://www.thecornsnake.co.uk
Here are some points:
1) Feed once a week, mice, that cost between 40p-£3
2) It is easy to find somewhere for them to live, and vivariums don’t need to be too big, and the decorations inside are cheap. Basically housing is easy and cheap and they are not many requirements.
Check out the website, its great!
Iguanas ARE NOT suitable lizards for a beginner.
If you want something powerful, get a hogg-island boa constrictor or a royal (ball) python, both these snake species are relatively small but still powerful.
Best reps for a beginner:
*Corn snake
*King snake – tough as nails
*Bearded dragon
I think you need to do some research first. Go to a reptile store (not a store like PetsMart or PetCo, a real store that all they handle is reptiles) and talk to someone who works there. I think the easiest to care for is a Bearded dragon or make a snake.
Don’t get an iguana or an animal that requires humidity, they aren’t good for beginners and will more than likely end up dead.
I will list a few reptiles that are great for beginners and are wonderful reptiles to own.
LIZARDS:
The Leopard gecko is a wonderful beginner reptile. They are very friendly and are sometimes chill. As babies they may seem a little flighty when handling but they will settle down as they mature. Leopard geckos are fed a daily diet consisting of crickets and meal worms. They have low cage requirements which make them easy to care for.
Bearded dragons are a very cool lizard to have as your first reptile. They are very chill and are friendly. Babies, too, seem flighty but settle down as they mature. Bearded dragons are fed a diet of greens, vegetables, fruits, and meats daily. Bearded dragons do have low cage requirements, but as adults will need an enclosure that is a 40-55 gallon.
Green Anoles are a small species of lizard, but make wonderful beginner reptiles. They are sometimes chill and very friendly. They have a diet consisting of mainly crickets, but can also be fed meal worms. They do not need a large enclosure, so a 10-20 gallon enclosure would fit one perfectly, or maybe even two.
SNAKES:
Corn snakes have always been a great starter snake. Corn snakes are one of the most friendliest snakes to buy and they have extraordinary colors and patterns. They are flighty snakes, but that isn’t unusual in colubrids (includes all non venomous snakes except pythons, boas, and snakes that are related to thread snakes). They will only need a 30-40 gallon as adults, and only need to be fed weekly. These snakes have low cage requirements so you won’t need to buy all of this stuff, unless you want to for cage decor like plants and sticks.
Ball pythons are an extremely cool species and very beautiful. They are also such a sweet and nice snake, so this makes them great for beginners. They love to hang out and are so chill, but also very curious. Adults will only need a 40-55 gallon, but most likely a 40 because they seem to fit very well in a 40 gallon. They have low cage requirements which make them easy to care for and clean up after.
Kenyan Sand boas are a very cool species of snake and are very friendly. They only get to a length of 3 feet, so they will only need a 20-30 gallon as adults. They are also very chill like the Ball pythons, and make a wonderful starter snake. Pythons and boas seem to be chill snakes, but are curious ones. These snakes, too, have low cage requirements.
Hognose snakes are a small species, only getting to about 3 feet in length as adults. They are friendly snakes once they are handled often and will only need a 20-30 gallon enclosure as adults. These snakes can be flighty at times, but usually do settle down with frequent handling. They have low cage requirements as well but are very beautiful snakes.
If you have any questions about any of these reptiles please email me and I will be glad to help you out. Before you purchase a reptile, you should do much research on the one you want. Trust me, it will help you out so much. Good luck!
a great beginner pet is a leopard gecko they don’t need alot of attention and are very easy to care for a good care sheet for them is at http://www.leopardgecko.com/emcare.html
Get A Nile Monitor.
well, here are some ideas for cool reptiles…
corn snake:not venomous, easy to care for, timid and rarely bite, comes in many different colours and patterns, dont get too big: about 5 feet or so but stay skinny…
ball python: non venomous, easy to care for, timid at most times, gets about 5-6ish feet long but get really thick, very strong snake, comes in normal and albino
columbian red tailed boa: easy to care for…get about 6-7 feet long, gets really thick, very strong snake, beautiful colors….
hope this helps, these are my first picks on snakes…a milk snake, rat snake or king snake may also be good ones as well.
Ohio does not have any regulations on reptiles, except for some permit requirements for some native ones. You would need to check your county, township and city to see if they have bans or regulations.
